On Our Way of Mugwort-Gathering, We Listened to an Old Mute Telling a Story

Perhaps our breakdown had to be, with the bridge nearby
A pickaxe and a rake were evidence
That his love and fear had already cross infected

We sat on the albino bridgehead, listening to water stirring up silt
That flowed over the face of an old man
And the mugwort-like face covered

Gesturing is far more sincere than telling
And we were not eager to know
Too many additives are in our not-knowing

We nodded, not to show our ears had grasped anything
But to urge him to go on
And our inability would then be condoned

Telling, by itself, was merely to remind us:
Men, not living animals, be it a comedy or tragedy
Their palms sweat only when the play is unfolding

I had no wish to misinterpret the outlook of life. It’s not about responsibility,
Only that it’s emotionally unacceptable. Therefore, the difficulty to communicate lay
In the unfortunate ambiguity of its beauty

How come the rope around our neck
Unexpectedly tightened, as if it were not us who were noosed
Not us, and this somehow freed the universe from anxiety

The countryside experience presented in the mute’s words
Was no more than what we already knew or would predict, for life story tended to
End with suffering and how to store leftovers in the fridge of emotions

No need to imagine that sight. Here had already turned redundant
The rope was put around the neck at a critical point, and a man full of air
Was suddenly dragged out of the story’s plot
There, left on the albino bridgehead was the thin figures of lonely mugworts

Black Swan

Another day is wasted
Contingency is unavoidable
Only reeds can her how real her wheezing snores can cut into skins
An invisible brush paints a wooden bridge with a new coat of woodoil
Several wrecked boats buried in the texture

During daytime, the inviolable daytime
No space for relentless words you hope you can say
Incantation has lost its charm
People here, people there, people everywhere, fishing

Daytime, the narcissistic daytime
Never changes shift
Never relieves itself
The unremitting hammer is way away from midnight stone of apricots

Daytime, daytime, one after another
And you become desperate
Need a vent, to be mad, cry, laugh or curse
But she is optimistic

Day, another daytime, still another
This dazzling mote of light absorbs a base you can no longer hold
Dislocates a blind man and the burrow in his eyes
And puts a caramel rock in the Five-Mile Lake
O, My! Lady Xishi will never fall before your heart is laid down

Notes: The Five-Mile Lake, also called Fan-Li Lake, is an inner lake within Taihu Lake, Wuxi, Jiangsu. It is said that 25oo years ago, Fan Li (517 b.c. -?), the great statesman from the Spring and Autumn period in China, after helping the King of Yue State to conquer and recover his country, retired to a secluded life here, with the most beautiful woman Lady Xishi.
