Gulliver
Over your body the clouds go
High, high and icily
And a little flat, as if they
Floated on a glass that was invisible.
Unlike swans,
Having no reflections;
Unlike you,
With no strings attached.
All cool, all blue. Unlike you------
You, there on your back,
Eyes to the sky.
The spider-men have caught you,
Winding and twining their petty fetters,
Their bribes------
So many silks.
How they hate you.
They converse in the valley of your fingers, they are inchworms.
They would have you sleep in their cabinets,
This toe and that toe, a relic.
Step off!
Step off seven leagues, like those distances
That revolve in Crivelli, untouchable.
Let this eye be an eagle,
The shadow of this lip, an abyss.

站到七里格之外,像那些距离
一再出现于克里威利的画中,难以触及。
让这只眼睛变为猎鹰,
这片嘴唇的阴影,一个深渊。

注释:
里格league是一种长度单位,一个里格相当于3英里,约4.8公里(league这个词最常用的意思是联盟,这层意思在阅读中也是有意味的)。
卡罗- 克里威利Carlo Crivelli (c. 1435- c.1495)是文艺复兴时期的意大利画家,其绘画具有晚期的哥特式装饰风格。他生于威尼斯,死于Marche马尔凯(这也是西方第一位汉语名人Matteo Ricci利玛窦1552-1610的故乡)。他最具代表性的绘画之一是这幅作于1486年的Annunciation with St. Emudius《天使报喜》。这幅画收藏于伦敦National Gallery国家美术馆,普拉斯有可能看过。从这幅画中,是否可以理解她说的“那些距离一再出现于克里威利的画中”呢?
